Every year Tennis Leicestershire holds a tournament to celebrate tennis for players. A range of events (29 in total) are run to provide competition for all levels of player. The ‘Level’ events are only open to those who qualify by birth or residence in Leicestershire and whose winners are the County Champions. The ‘Handicap’ events are those in which players are given a ‘handicap’ according to their ability and do not have any qualification restrictions.

The level events are recognised as a Level 3 LTA tournament. The Championships are regarded nationally as the most successful in the country because of the number of participants and the broad range of events offered to all standards and ages of players.

The championships are Leicestershire’s ‘Tennis Festival’ held every year at the end of July / beginning of August; they run over two weekends and every weekday evening between so that everyone can enter and fit the competition into their busy lives. The matches are played at a number of clubs located close to Leicestershire LTC, the ‘base’ of the championships.

Posters are circulated to all tennis clubs and ‘places to play’ advertising the championships. You can only enter online at and follow the link. The website provides information about completing the form. The closing date for entry is Saturday 5th July. All players are informed about their first match (normally sometime during the first weekend) and are expected to come to the tournament desk at Leicestershire LTC about 15 minutes prior to the match time given where they will be meet their opponents and told where they will be playing and, where needed, the handicap explained.

Entrants (400+) come from tennis clubs and parks across the city and county. They range in age from youngsters who are competent at playing in competitions alongside adults to senior players referred to as ‘super-vets’ (over 60s) with a good number in their 70s.

The finals are played on the second Saturday and Sunday with umpires from the LTA for some of the finals, men’s and women’s singles, doubles and mixed events. Finals in all other events are played over the weekend at Leicestershire LTC.

The Championships are a fixture in the calendar for many tennis players and their families. They provide the opportunity to renew friendships and rivalries in very welcoming clubs. In addition, keen competition is provided for the players and exciting matches for the spectators.
